A crucial part of developing Power\u00a0<\/span>BI<\/span>\u00a0reports is knowing your audience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>One of the things that I like to keep in mind during the development of a\u00a0<\/span>report<\/span>\u00a0is the data literacy level of my report users.<\/span>\u00a0Do<\/span>\u00a0my<\/span>\u00a0users have a positive attitude towards data? Are they familiar with data and visualizations?\u00a0<\/span>Do they\u00a0<\/span>have some advanced experience in Excel (pivot tables and\u00a0<\/span>VLOOKUP<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>do they\u00a0<\/span>already\u00a0<\/span>possess<\/span>\u00a0basic Power BI skills<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0If\u00a0<\/span>the answer to these questions is\u00a0<\/span>yes, it<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>s certain\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>you are dealing with user<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0that <\/span>know<\/span>\u00a0their way around data and reports<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>These\u00a0<\/span>users, however,<\/span>\u00a0will have a lot of different opinions on what type of visuals they would like to see. Or\u00a0<\/span>about<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which measures\u00a0<\/span>they would<\/span>\u00a0like to see in their\u00a0<\/span>visuals.<\/span>\u00a0Wouldn’t it be\u00a0<\/span>great\u00a0<\/span>if you could make them all happy?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Visual Customization option:<\/span><\/h5>

Luckily for us<\/span>, Power BI has<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>visual customization option<\/span>\u00a0that allows<\/span>\u00a0users to transform existing visuals in their report<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>better\u00a0<\/span>fit their own needs. Every Power BI user can use this feature<\/span>\u00a0and they can<\/span>\u00a0save their customizations by bookmarking them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ll\u00a0<\/span>their changes\u00a0<\/span>will<\/span>\u00a0not affect the centrally managed and distributed report or app. Awesome right?\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0gives you the power to let your users have\u00a0<\/span>direct\u00a0<\/span>input in the report. However, with great power comes great responsibility.\u00a0<\/span>K<\/span>eep in\u00a0<\/span>mind<\/span>\u00a0that when you activate the visual customization option, users will see all tables, columns<\/span>, and measures of your report and will be able to swap or add them to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their visuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This can be daunting if<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>your data model is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>large,\u00a0containing\u00a0multiple tables,\u00a0columns\u00a0and measures.\u00a0Furthermore, if users are unfamiliar with data modeling, they will also be at risk of combining measures with unrelated table columns. So be careful with the power\u00a0you\u00a0bestow\u00a0on them. There\u00a0is, however,\u00a0a way to make life easier\u00a0for\u00a0your report users\u00a0(and for you).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

PERSPECTIVES:<\/span><\/h5><\/div>

By using perspectives, you can decide which fields in your data model are shared with the user. To use them, you will first need to personalize the report’s visuals and create at least one perspective for the dimensions and measures you want users to work with. Power BI alone, however, does not have the option to create perspectives. You need to install Tabular Editor, a third-party software tool. After installing it, navigate to external tooling in the Power BI ribbon and open tabular editor.<\/p>

\"\"Create a new perspective by right clicking on perspective and naming it however you like. For my example, I named my perspective \u201ccustomView\u201d. Once you have created your perspective, you can select the columns and measures you want to add. After you have made your selection, right click on one of the selected objects and show it in your perspective. You also need to enable the Personal Visualization option in your report settings: File > Options & Settings > Options > Current File > Report Settings.<\/em><\/p>

All we need to do now is assign the perspective to the visuals: I would not advise applying the personalization option on all visuals. There might be some static visuals or slicers running in your report and you do not want users to be able to mess with them. Navigate to the format pane and scroll down to personalize visuals until you see a new section – Personalize visual. Go ahead and change the Report-reader perspective to the perspective you have created.\"\"<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The only thing left to do is publish the report! Congratulations, you just improved the user experience by increasing the self-service level of your report. Now users can change their report by clicking on the personalized visual icon. Keep in mind that this feature is not available when publishing to the web and it is also not supported in the Power BI mobile apps for phones. As a workaround, you could change a visual and bookmark it in the Power BI service. \u00a0All the changes will then be visible in Power BI mobile app too!<\/p>
